Grade 2 borrowed the book "The Jolly Postman or other Peoples's Letters" from Ms Burden.  The Jolly Postman, in which a postman delivers letters to storybook characters. They explore different types of mail and categorize letters from the story tale characters. There are letters from witches, Goldilocks and the 3 bears, Cinderella, Baby Bunting and many more. We all then wrote our own letters back to Ms Burden and we were delighted to have a newsletter on our board one morning

On Friday Grade 2 planted their own lima beans.  We now know that plants have certain requirements in order to grow: sunlight, water and carbon dioxide. We did not use pots and soil this time. We tried using small zip bags and paper towels. Tomorrow, after a week attached to the window , we will see if our beans have germinated.

Today in class we were planting our own seeds.  We watched a few clips from Youtube to see the procedure for planting a seed.  Then we read a short non-fiction book to see what the plants' requirements are in order for it to grow.  We found that a seed needs soil, sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to reach its full potential and grow properly.  We discovered new vocabulary such as nutrients, germinate, carbon dioxide, sunlight, saturate and photosynthesis. Finally, we had a go at writing our own procedures for planting a seed.  Please come and visit the Grade 2 area to see how our seedlings are progressing.

This week Grade 2 are starting their new unit of inquiry.  The central idea is: Plants support all living things and have certain requirements in order to grow.  We have already looked at some items which come from plants.  Look at the photos to see how many you would recognize. Also, we had 2 great students questions: Where does chocolate come from and how are clothes made from plants?  See if you can find out the answers!  Later this week, Grade 2 will visit Prince's Nursery to buy their own plants.  Come and have a look in the Grade 2 area to see which plant is your favourite!
